Bobunik
The BOBUNIK mask (the sun caller) was a ritual mask. The drummer was calling for light - the sun.
(story was narrated by Jože Čančar from Volčanski Rut and Štefan Dugar from Vogrinki)
The BOBUNIK (sun summoner) mask consists of a headpiece (TANAGLAVNIK) and a linen apron (MAUHASTI BIRTUNIK).
For TANAGLAVNIK, they used a copper cauldron, the sides of which were decorated with rye and buckwheat straw. Bean pods were tied to the ears of the cauldron with woolen yarn. While invoking the sun, the BOBUNIK was banging with laburnum sticks on a copper cauldron that he had attached to his head.
MAUHASTI BIRTUNIK was hung on the metal handle of the cauldron. The BOBUNIK carried buckwheat and rye seeds in his apron, which he distributed to those present after calling the sun. The day for calling the sun is not supposed to be fixed. It was done sometime at the end of February.
